Job description
About the role
The Principal Propulsor Aeromechanics Engineer will own the aeromechanics of aircraft propulsors, covering duct and blade aerodynamics, rotor dynamics, aeroelastic behaviour and acoustics. The role focuses on shrouded lift fans and distributed propulsion concepts, addressing inflow distortion, propulsor‑airframe interaction, transition flight and aeroelastic coupling.
Key responsibilities
- Lead duct and blade aerodynamic design and generate propulsor performance maps for hover, edgewise flight, transition and cruise.
- Analyse inflow distortion effects on blade loading, unsteady aerodynamics and thrust variation.
- Own rotor and blade structural dynamics, including critical speeds, resonance avoidance, imbalance and blade‑loss scenarios.
- Conduct propulsor aeroelastic analysis and integrate models into aircraft‑level aeroelastic and whirl‑flutter assessments.
- Manage propulsor aeroacoustics, characterising noise sources and defining reduction measures.
- Collaborate with Flight Sciences on propulsor‑airframe aerodynamic interaction and installed thrust/lift interference.
- Define and interpret propulsor testing (whirl rig, thrust stand, inflow and acoustic tests) and correlate results with analysis.
- Work closely with propulsion, aerodynamics, structures, flight sciences and test teams.
Required profile
- 10+ years of experience in turbomachinery, rotorcraft or propeller aeromechanics.
- At least 4 years of experience in aircraft applications.
- Proven ownership of fan, rotor or propeller aerodynamic design through validation and testing.
- Strong background in rotor and blade structural dynamics, resonance and imbalance cases.
- Deep understanding of unsteady aerodynamics and inflow distortion.
