Senior Energy Consultant - BESS

About the role

GHD, a multidisciplinary professional services firm, is strengthening its Middle East Energy team and is hiring a Senior Energy Consultant focused on battery energy storage systems (BESS). The consultant leads and contributes to energy-sector work across the Middle East, combining technical delivery with project coordination, client engagement, proposal development and mentoring of junior professionals.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and contribute to multidisciplinary technical workstreams covering electricity networks, renewable energy, energy storage, system integration and energy strategy
• Deliver feasibility and options studies, engineering assessments and technical advisory assignments from scoping to final recommendations
• Support planning, design and delivery of network and substation projects, including design coordination, specifications, procurement and construction-stage input
• Review designs, calculations and documentation against standards and good practice
• Carry out technical due diligence and Owner's Engineer assignments, assessing risks and recommending actions
• Coordinate inputs from multiple disciplines and engage with clients, utilities, developers and contractors
• Manage assigned scopes within agreed programme, budget, quality, governance and health and safety requirements, including acting as project manager
• Prepare technical deliverables, support proposals and business development, and mentor junior professionals
• Maintain relationships with industry peers, OEMs, contractors and clients

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Energy or Power Engineering or a related discipline; a postgraduate qualification is advantageous
• Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in consulting, utilities, project development, engineering, EPC, Owner's Engineer or technical advisory roles
• Recent Middle East BESS project experience, or international utility-scale or solar-hybrid BESS projects over 50 MW, is advantageous
• Experience with Middle East utilities, regulatory frameworks or project delivery is highly regarded
• Fluency in written and spoken English; occasional regional or international travel may be required

Required skills

• Familiarity with BESS techno-economic modelling and metrics such as RTE, SOH and availability
• Knowledge of BESS project contracting forms such as LTSA, IPP, ESA or ISP
• Understanding of BESS compliance requirements in the Middle East and international standards
• Technical depth in areas such as networks and substations, renewable energy, energy storage, grid connection, energy modelling or due diligence
• Tools such as DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP, PSS/E, PSCAD, PLEXOS, Python or similar, depending on specialism
• Strong written, presentation and client-facing communication skills
• Chartered Engineer status or progress toward it is advantageous
