Senior Java Engineer (Payments)

About the role

Join a specialized engineering environment designing and delivering secure, scalable payment platforms for global financial services organizations. This fully remote senior role offers technical leadership, international collaboration, and impact on mission‑critical transaction systems.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop, and optimise enterprise‑grade Java and Spring Boot applications, owning features from design through production.
• Define service boundaries, data models and integration patterns, ensuring reliability, maintainability and scalability.
• Build and maintain payment platforms and integrations with external APIs, third‑party providers and financial networks.
• Implement event‑driven architectures using Apache Kafka, handling idempotency, transaction consistency and exactly‑once processing.
• Collaborate with product managers, solution architects and DevOps to translate business needs into technical solutions.
• Improve CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, observability and deployment processes.
• Lead code reviews, mentor junior engineers and promote engineering best practices.
• Manage production incidents, perform root‑cause analysis and implement sustainable fixes.

Required profile

• Minimum 7 years of professional Java development experience with responsibility for complex production systems.
• Hands‑on experience building or operating payment or fintech systems, understanding transaction lifecycles, reconciliation and regulatory constraints.
• Strong knowledge of Java 21+ and Spring Boot/Spring Framework for RESTful and event‑driven microservices.
• Proven experience with Apache Kafka, asynchronous processing and exactly‑once semantics.
• Solid background with PostgreSQL, MySQL, Hibernate and JPA.
• Experience designing REST APIs, OpenAPI specifications and integrating third‑party services.
• Proficiency with Gradle, Maven, GitHub Actions, Helm and Terraform.
• Hands‑on AWS, Docker and Kubernetes deployment experience.
• Strong testing practices using JUnit 5, Mockito and Testcontainers, plus observability tools such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus and Grafana.
