Superintendent, Fleet Operations

About the role

The Superintendent, Fleet Operations schedules, coordinates, supervises and monitors the day-to-day running of a marine terminal so that ships, vessels and other marine units receive safe and effective marine services. The role works under the supervision of the department manager, section head or team leader.

Key responsibilities

• Direct and control terminal operations so that service quality meets recognised criteria and approved guidelines, and eliminate hazards to company facilities.
• Allocate daily tasks according to approved roles, evaluate work outcomes and set performance goals, schedules and milestones.
• Monitor operations controls against safety requirements and policy, review reports, log books and statistics to spot unsafe work and recommend procedure changes.
• Develop contingency plans, take part in drills and evaluate changes to approved schedules to minimise impact on targets.
• Allocate material, human and financial resources and direct scheduling and dispatching of terminal resources in line with shipping schedules.
• Advise senior management and clients on marine issues and support the procurement of new marine equipment.
• Screen technical specifications for new projects and tenders, evaluate service providers and interface with maintenance and engineering teams.
• Take part in emergency response plans and drills, investigate marine incidents and non-compliances, and issue and follow up on staff performance assessments and certifications.
• Coordinate vessel arrival and departure activities with other departments and act as liaison with vessel traffic management operators.
• Respond to enquiries and complaints, train and manage terminal pilots, vessel crews, shore operators and other staff, and conduct pre-engagement reviews and risk assessments before work begins.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering or equivalent.
• 8 years of experience, including at least 5 years in shipping or logistics.
