Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialist – Coding

About the role

The Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) Specialist – Coding will audit inpatient and outpatient cases to ensure accurate DRG validation and improve documentation quality. Working closely with physicians, coders, and the CDI team, the specialist will streamline processes, identify training needs, and uphold regulatory compliance.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare medical records to accurately reflect severity of illness and support proper coding.
• Conduct remote and on‑site chart reviews, performing clinical validation audits per AHIMA guidelines.
• Develop and deliver education to physicians and healthcare providers on documentation best practices.
• Use query processes to resolve ambiguous coding situations and obtain necessary clinical details.
• Analyze review data to pinpoint improvement areas and recommend targeted training.
• Create spreadsheets and reports to document audit findings and support continuous improvement.
• Communicate policies and procedures effectively across the organization.

Required profile

• Strong coding expertise with extensive knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes, anatomy and physiology.
• Deep understanding of CDI workflow, DRG validation, and regulatory standards.
• Ability to act as a trusted advisor to physicians and business partners.

Required skills

• Medical coding (ICD‑10‑CM, CPT) and DRG validation.
• Medical terminology and AHIMA documentation guidelines.
• Data analysis and reporting using spreadsheets (Excel).
• Clinical documentation auditing and query management.
