Mechanical Design Engineer – Hands‑on Product Development

About the role

We are looking for a hands‑on Mechanical Design Engineer who will turn concepts, sketches and specifications into manufacturable products. The role sits at the intersection of design, prototyping and production, working closely with research and engineering leadership to bring ideas to market.

Key responsibilities

• Interpret whiteboard discussions, sketches and written specs into robust mechanical designs.
• Collaborate with researchers and technical leaders to develop production‑ready solutions.
• Create detailed 3D models, engineering drawings and supporting documentation.
• Design components that balance performance, cost and manufacturability.
• Work with manufacturing partners, machine shops and production facilities to ensure successful fabrication.
• Support prototype development using 3D printing and rapid manufacturing techniques.
• Assemble, test and refine prototypes and mechanical systems.
• Participate in design reviews and provide input on materials, processes and production methods.

Required profile

• Strong practical experience in mechanical design, drafting or mechanical engineering.
• Ability to convert conceptual discussions into detailed engineering designs.
• Hands‑on workshop experience with engineering hand tools and machine tools.
• Problem‑solving mindset and practical engineering approach.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks (or ability to transition quickly).
• Experience with other CAD platforms.
• Basic knowledge of Finite Element Analysis or ability to perform hand calculations.
• Understanding of machining, moulding and additive manufacturing processes.
• Design of metal and plastic components, including sheet‑metal where applicable.
• Familiarity with 3D printing and rapid prototyping.
