Associate Professor, Maritime Shipping Management

About the role

The Sharjah Maritime Academy is recruiting an Associate Professor in Maritime Shipping Management. The post supports the Head of the Maritime Logistics and Supply Chain Management Program in meeting the Academy's strategic, academic, research and industry engagement objectives, and involves teaching postgraduate courses, supervising research and mentoring students.

Key responsibilities

• Teach postgraduate courses on topics such as maritime economics, safety and risk management, maritime law, shipping operations, shipping finance, port and customs regulations, as assigned by the Head.
• Deliver high-quality lectures, seminars, workshops, simulations and case studies using effective pedagogical approaches.
• Supervise postgraduate dissertations, applied research projects, internships and capstone projects.
• Contribute to the Academy's research profile through publications, collaborative projects, conference participation and research funding applications.
• Take part in assessment, including examination setting, moderation, marking, viva examinations and project evaluation.
• Keep up to date with developments in shipping, fleet management, digital shipping, sustainability and international maritime regulations.
• Ensure compliance with academic regulations, quality assurance requirements and the annual academic calendar.
• Develop the curriculum, take part in accreditation and quality assurance activities, and act as academic advisor and mentor to students.
• Participate in departmental and institutional committees, and represent the Academy at conferences and industry events.

Required profile

• PhD in Shipping Management, Maritime Management, Maritime Economics, Maritime Operations, Shipping Finance or a closely related discipline.
• Professional maritime or shipping certification, a recognized higher education teaching qualification, and membership or fellowship of a relevant professional body.
• For an Associate Professor appointment: a minimum of 10 years of teaching experience at the rank of Assistant Professor or above after the PhD, or 10 years post-PhD including at least 5 years at Associate Professor level; 10 years of postgraduate teaching in shipping-related disciplines and relevant industry experience.
• Experience supervising postgraduate projects, publishing in peer-reviewed journals, developing curricula and leading courses.
• Familiarity with international maritime regulations (SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, ISPS Code, IMO instruments), UAE quality assurance and accreditation, and learning management systems.

Required skills

• Advanced knowledge of shipping operations, fleet management, maritime economics, shipping finance, chartering and voyage planning.
• Knowledge of maritime safety, risk management, digital shipping, AI, automation, sustainability and ESG.
• Strong teaching, presentation, facilitation and postgraduate supervision skills, with effective written and verbal English.
