Head of Department – English

About the role

The Head of Department – English will lead the English curriculum across Pre‑Prep to Sixth Form at GEMS School of Research and Innovation. Reporting to senior leadership, the role combines traditional literary studies with modern communication and digital storytelling to prepare students for future academic and career pathways.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and deliver a forward‑thinking English programme that balances literature analysis, creative and academic writing, and critical thinking.
• Integrate digital media, journalism and emerging technologies into lesson plans to enhance student engagement.
• Lead a team of English teachers, providing mentorship, performance feedback and professional development.
• Collaborate with cross‑departmental partners to embed AI, robotics, VR/AR and other innovative tools into the English learning experience.
• Monitor student progress, assess outcomes and adjust curriculum to meet high academic standards.

Required profile

• Proven leadership experience in an English or language department within a school setting.
• Strong understanding of contemporary educational technologies and their application to language teaching.
• Excellent communication, analytical and organisational skills.
