Mechanical Design Engineer (m/f/d)

About the role

We are looking for a hands‑on Mechanical Design Engineer who will turn concepts, sketches and specifications into manufacturable products. The role works closely with research and engineering leadership to develop mechanical components from idea through detailed design, prototyping and production.

Key responsibilities

• Translate whiteboard discussions, sketches and written specifications into robust mechanical designs.
• Collaborate with researchers and technical leaders to develop production‑ready engineering solutions.
• Create detailed engineering drawings, 3D models and supporting technical documentation.
• Develop practical, cost‑effective designs that balance performance and manufacturability.
• Work directly with manufacturing partners, machine shops and production facilities to ensure successful fabrication.
• Support prototype development using 3D printing and other rapid manufacturing techniques.
• Assemble, test and refine prototypes and mechanical systems as required.
• Participate in design reviews and provide input on manufacturability, materials and production methods.

Required profile

• Strong practical experience in mechanical design, drafting or mechanical engineering.
• Ability to convert conceptual discussions and requirements into detailed engineering designs.
• Hands‑on workshop experience with engineering hand tools and machine tools.
• Proven problem‑solving abilities and a practical engineering mindset.
• Experience working effectively with external manufacturers, fabricators and machine shops.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in SolidWorks (or rapid transition to SolidWorks).
• Experience with other CAD platforms.
• Knowledge of machining, moulding and additive manufacturing processes.
• Design of metal and plastic components, including sheet‑metal design.
• Proficiency with 3D printing for rapid prototyping.
• Basic Finite Element Analysis (FEA) or ability to perform hand calculations.
• Understanding of pressure‑containing components and ability to design for pressures up to 125 bar.
• Familiarity with ceramics, moulding technologies and advanced manufacturing processes.
• Experience with structural frame and mechanical support design.
