Principal AI Engineer - AI/Computer Vision

About the role

EDGE, an advanced technology group headquartered in the UAE focused on defence and emerging technologies, is seeking a Principal AI Engineer in Abu Dhabi. The role provides technical leadership for the design, development, integration, verification and deployment of advanced AI and computer vision solutions for edge and mission-critical platforms, working with AI, embedded, systems, hardware, test, product and programme teams.

Key responsibilities

• Translate system-level requirements into software architectures and designs, and lead the full life cycle of AI and computer vision software.
• Build high-performance video analytics and AI software in Python and C++ for edge and embedded platforms, including object detection, tracking, recognition and classification.
• Design scalable architectures, interfaces and integration strategies, and resolve complex software, AI and embedded issues across PC and edge devices.
• Profile and optimise performance across CPU, GPU, memory bandwidth and I/O, and integrate AI, embedded, hardware, systems and test components.
• Define coding standards, code review, testing and quality gates, and lead technical teams and projects with mentorship.
• Plan and run verification activities, follow the V-model and engineering, quality, safety and configuration-management processes, and contribute to milestone reviews (SDR, PDR, CDR, TRR).
• Support the product lifecycle from concept to field deployment, stay current with emerging AI/ML and computer vision technologies, and provide field support when needed.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, AI, Machine Learning, Computer Engineering or a related field.
• 12+ years of professional experience in software engineering, AI/ML, computer vision or a related field, including at least 4 years in a principal engineer, lead engineer, software architect or equivalent leadership role.
• Proven track record of taking complex AI/software solutions from concept through deployment, and experience leading technical teams and projects.
• Willingness to travel and provide field support.

Required skills

• Strong hands-on Python and C++ programming.
• Deep understanding of deep learning, computer vision and video analytics, including CNNs, RNNs/LSTMs, Vision Transformers, GANs and diffusion models.
• Experience with PyTorch and/or TensorFlow.
• Preferred: Linux systems engineering, NVIDIA Jetson, ROS 2, MAVLink, embedded and real-time software, and familiarity with RTCA DO-178B, ARP4754, MIL-STD-498 and IEEE/EIA 12207.
