Cutter Captain – Self-Propelled Cutter Suction Dredger

About the role

The Cutter Captain commands a Self‑Propelled Cutter Suction Dredger (SPCSD) and is responsible for safe, efficient dredging operations in compliance with international maritime regulations and company procedures.

Key responsibilities

• Navigate, maneuver, anchor and position the dredger during dredging and sailing operations.
• Plan and supervise dredging activities in coordination with project, production, survey and technical teams.
• Monitor cutter performance, slurry flow, ballast, stability and operational parameters to meet project targets.
• Ensure compliance with ISM Code, SOLAS, MARPOL, flag state regulations and company HSE policies.
• Conduct toolbox talks, safety meetings, emergency drills and risk assessments onboard.
• Maintain communication with port authorities, clients, pilots and marine coordinators.
• Oversee bridge watchkeeping, navigation equipment, voyage planning and PMS implementation.
• Supervise crew discipline, welfare, training and competency management.

Required profile

• Master Unlimited license (captain’s certificate).
• Basic and advanced STCW training certification.
• 5‑10 years of rank experience on SPCSD or similar dredging vessels.

Required skills

• Vessel stability and ballast management.
• Planned Maintenance System (PMS) operation.
• Dredging equipment handling (cutter, spuds, pipelines, anchors).
