Electrical Specialist - Power System Protection

About the role

Bilfinger is recruiting an Electrical Specialist for Power System Protection on a site-based project at ADNOC Onshore / ADNOC Refining Facilities in Ruwais, Abu Dhabi, within the Electrical Maintenance & Reliability department. The specialist maintains, tests, configures and troubleshoots protection relay systems across LV, MV, HV and EHV networks, ensuring safe and reliable power system operation.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain, configure, test and troubleshoot protection relays (ABB Relion, Siemens SIPROTEC, GE Multilin, MiCOM) and keep relay databases, settings files and asset records up to date.
• Perform preventive maintenance and shutdown testing, including secondary injection testing with OMICRON equipment, and verify settings, selectivity, coordination and trip logic.
• Support commissioning, loop checking, startup and energization, and validate protection system modifications and upgrades.
• Monitor relay assets, review alarms, event logs and disturbance records, and develop reliability improvement programs.
• Analyze faults, trips and blackouts, perform root cause analysis, prepare technical investigation reports and manage critical spare parts and obsolescence programs.
• Provide specialist support during shutdowns, turnarounds and emergencies, coordinate with OEMs and contractors, and comply with ADNOC HSE requirements, including HAZOP, risk assessment, SIMOPS and permit-to-work.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum 15 years of experience in power system protection and protection relay engineering.
• Minimum 10 years in oil & gas, refining, petrochemical, utilities or ADNOC facilities.
• Proven experience with LV, MV, HV and EHV protection systems.
• Preferred: OMICRON certification, OEM relay certifications, HV/LV switching authorization, and CMRP certification.

Required skills

• Relay types: ABB Relion, Siemens SIPROTEC, GE Multilin, Schneider MiCOM, numerical and digital relays.
• Protection functions: overcurrent, earth fault, differential, distance, motor, transformer, generator, busbar, under/over voltage and frequency protection.
• Studies: relay coordination, grading, short circuit, load flow, arc flash assessment.
• Software: Siemens SIGRA, COMTRADE analysis, ABB PCM600, GE EnerVista, MiCOM S1 Studio, SAP PM/EAM modules.
• Testing equipment: OMICRON CMC series, secondary injection sets, power quality analyzers, harmonic monitoring equipment.
