About the role
The 2nd Officer will support the Master in safe navigation and dredging operations aboard a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger. This role combines watch‑keeping, safety management and deck supervision to ensure efficient and compliant vessel operations.
Key responsibilities
- Perform navigational watch‑keeping in line with STCW, COLREG and company procedures.
- Assist the Master with voyage planning, navigation, and dredging execution.
- Maintain and update ECDIS, navigational charts, publications and bridge documentation.
- Monitor and maintain navigational equipment, communication systems and bridge instruments.
- Act as Safety Officer, overseeing HSE compliance, risk assessments and permit‑to‑work processes.
- Plan, coordinate and conduct emergency drills, safety inspections and crew training.
- Supervise deck operations such as mooring, anchoring, towing, pilot transfer and cargo handling.
- Assist with hopper loading, ballast operations, vessel stability, trim and draft monitoring during dredging.
- Ensure statutory certificates, safety records and operational documentation meet Flag State, Class and company requirements.
- Inspect and maintain lifesaving appliances, firefighting equipment and emergency gear.
- Monitor weather, tides, navigational warnings and maritime traffic for safe navigation.
- Maintain compliance with SOLAS, MARPOL, ISM Code, ISPS Code and company policies.
- Prepare reports, bridge and safety logs, and contribute to continuous improvement.
Required profile
- Certificate of Competency as Officer in charge of Navigation Watch.
- Basic and advanced STCW training with a valid medical certificate.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience on a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger.
Required skills
- Proficiency with ECDIS and navigational chart maintenance.
- Operation of bridge navigation and communication equipment.
- Safety equipment inspection and emergency drill coordination.
- Supervision of deck operations including mooring, anchoring and ballast management.
- Knowledge of vessel stability, trim and draft calculations.
