Backend Engineer (Java, Spring Boot, Microservices)

About the role

First Orion, a telecommunications technology company protecting consumers from scam and spoofed calls, is looking for an experienced Backend Engineer to design, build, deploy and own core microservices. The role focuses on backend architecture and cloud deployment for services supporting call treatment orchestration, brand data, analytics and billing. It is an individual contributor position with no direct people management responsibilities, and the position may be based in the United Kingdom or Dubai, UAE.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build, enhance and own Java 21 and Spring Boot 3.x microservices
• Develop REST APIs for call treatment orchestration, brand data, analytics and billing
• Apply hexagonal architecture to isolate business logic from infrastructure
• Build event-driven services using Apache Kafka
• Work with PostgreSQL, Redis and MinIO or other S3-compatible object storage
• Containerize and deploy services with Docker and Kubernetes
• Implement secure integrations using identity, access management and secrets management
• Build observable services with monitoring, structured logging, dashboards and distributed tracing
• Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, technical design, testing, troubleshooting and production support

Required profile

• 3+ years of professional Java development (Java 11 or later; Java 17 or 21 preferred)
• Hands-on Spring Boot 3.x experience, including Web, Data JPA and Security
• REST API design and implementation experience
• PostgreSQL and/or Redis experience
• Git; Bitbucket experience preferred
• Foundational Docker and Kubernetes knowledge
• Microservice architecture and production service delivery experience
• Ability to work in a collaborative, distributed environment

Nice to have

• Gradle with Kotlin DSL, OIDC, Helm charts, S3-compatible storage and secrets management
• Telecoms or carrier-integration exposure, multi-tenant SaaS experience
• Hexagonal, ports-and-adapters or clean architecture
• GDPR, data residency or regional data protection knowledge

• Salary of GBP 30,800 - 54,100 for UK-based employees, depending on experience
