Chief Technician – Solid Rocket Motors

About the role

The Chief Technician will lead precision metal fabrication, CNC machining and mechanical assembly for solid rocket motor components in the aerospace and defence sector. This senior, hands‑on role ensures all parts meet strict engineering, GD&T and material traceability standards.

Key responsibilities

• Lead metal fabrication and CNC machining of motor cases, bulkheads, closures, nozzle components and igniter hardware, including set‑up and programming of lathes, mills and machining centres.
• Supervise and develop workshop staff, enforce safety procedures and promote a culture of precision and continuous improvement.
• Conduct in‑process and final dimensional inspections using CMMs, micrometres and other precision metrology equipment, maintaining inspection records and FAIRs.
• Manage prototype schedules, coordinate outsourced suppliers, and ensure material certification and traceability.
• Review designs for manufacturability, provide feedback on tolerances and materials, and support mechanical assembly of sub‑assemblies.

Required profile

• Diploma or technical qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Technology or related field; a Bachelor’s degree is advantageous.
• 15+ years of precision metal parts manufacturing experience in aerospace/defence, with at least 5 years in a senior technical leadership role.
• Proven experience machining rocket motor hardware or comparable high‑consequence components.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency in CNC turning, milling, drilling and machining‑centre operations.
• Strong knowledge of engineering drawings, GD&T and surface‑finish specifications.
• Expertise in precision metrology, CMM operation and dimensional inspection.
• Familiarity with aerospace materials such as steel, aluminium, titanium and nickel‑based superalloys.
• Understanding of aerospace quality systems (AS9100) and first‑article inspection processes.
• Experience with flow forming, tube spinning, forging, ring rolling, heat treatment, welding and brazing.
• CAM software skills (e.g., Mastercam, Fusion 360) and relevant certifications (CMM, NDT, aerospace welding).
