Chief Technician – Solid Rocket Motors

About the role

EDGE is seeking an experienced Chief Technician to lead the manufacturing and assembly of solid rocket motor hardware for advanced defence and aerospace programmes. This hands‑on technical leadership role oversees machining, fabrication, inspection and assembly of metallic SRM components.

Key responsibilities

• Lead fabrication and CNC machining of motor cases, bulkheads, closures, nozzles and igniter bodies.
• Supervise and mentor machinists and technicians, ensuring safe, efficient workshop operations.
• Manage prototype and development hardware schedules and coordinate material procurement and certification.
• Conduct dimensional inspections using CMMs, micrometres and bore gauges, and lead root‑cause investigations for non‑conformances.
• Develop machining processes, tooling, fixtures, setup sheets and work instructions for repeatable production.

Required profile

• Diploma or Technical Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Technology or related field.
• 10‑15 years of precision metal parts manufacturing experience in aerospace, defence or high‑performance engineering.
• 5+ years in a senior machinist, manufacturing lead or workshop supervision role.
• Experience with pressure‑containing or flight‑critical hardware and knowledge of AS9100/FAI requirements.

Required skills

• CNC turning, milling and drilling operations.
• Programming and operating CNC lathes and machining centres.
• Interpretation of engineering drawings and GD&T.
• CMM operation and precision measurement techniques.
• CAM software (Mastercam, Fusion 360) and DFMA principles.
• NDT methods (PT/MT) and aerospace welding processes.
