Head of English Department (EYFS to KS5)

About the role

The school is seeking an experienced leader to head the English department across all key stages, from Early Years Foundation Stage to Key Stage 5. The role combines strategic development with day‑to‑day management to ensure high‑quality teaching, learning and pupil outcomes.

Key responsibilities

• Provide dynamic leadership for the English department across primary and secondary phases, developing a clear vision and improvement plan.
• Design, develop and oversee a progressive English curriculum ensuring clear progression from EYFS to KS5.
• Monitor, evaluate and improve teaching quality through modelling best practice, lesson observations and learning walks.
• Use assessment data to track progress, identify under‑achievement and implement targeted interventions.
• Support and mentor staff through performance management, CPD and regular departmental meetings.
• Collaborate with other subject leaders, phase leaders and senior leadership to align English provision with whole‑school priorities.
• Uphold safeguarding policies and act as a professional role model for pupils and staff.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree plus PGDE/PGCE or Masters degree.
• Minimum of 4 years of relevant teaching and leadership experience.
• Proven ability to lead a department and manage staff across primary and secondary phases.
• Experience using data to drive improvement and support SEND and EAL learners.
• Strong knowledge of national English curriculum and assessment developments.
