Head of Individuals & Societies (IB)

About the role

GEMS International School, Al Khail is seeking a dynamic leader to head its Individuals & Societies (I&S) department. The role involves shaping an inquiry‑based curriculum that aligns with the IB philosophy and inspires both teachers and students to achieve academic excellence.

Key responsibilities

• Lead, develop, and inspire the I&S department to deliver high‑quality, inquiry‑based learning.
• Oversee planning and delivery of a vertically and horizontally aligned I&S curriculum in line with IB frameworks.
• Create and sustain an inclusive departmental culture that promotes high expectations, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
• Coach and mentor teachers through observations, feedback, and professional dialogue.
• Ensure effective differentiation for EAL learners, gifted students, and those needing additional support.
• Utilise assessment data to monitor progress, inform interventions, and drive student outcomes.
• Integrate technology and innovative pedagogies to deepen understanding.
• Collaborate with senior leaders and cross‑curricular teams on school‑wide initiatives.
• Engage with parents and the wider community regarding curriculum and progress.
• Contribute to co‑curricular activities and school events.

Required profile

• Minimum three years of teaching experience in the IB Individuals & Societies curriculum.
• Relevant teaching qualification at degree level (B.Ed, PGCE, PGDE or equivalent).
• Demonstrated leadership experience in a secondary school setting.
• Experience supporting diverse learners, including EAL, gifted, and students requiring additional support.

Required skills

• Strong knowledge of the IB framework and assessment practices.
