Hopper Captain – Trailing Suction Dredger

About the role

The Hopper Captain is responsible for the safe, efficient and economical operation of a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger (TSHD). Reporting to the Marine Superintendent, you will lead the vessel’s marine and dredging teams to achieve daily dredging targets while ensuring compliance with all regulatory and project requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and execute dredging campaigns in coordination with the Chief Officer, Project Manager and client.
• Conduct safe navigation during steaming, dredging, loading, sailing, disposal and reclamation operations.
• Control vessel speed, heading, track, under‑keel clearance and dredging pattern.
• Monitor hopper loading, draft, trim, stability and free‑surface effects according to approved criteria.
• Supervise bridge and dredging teams, maintain communication with engine department and pipe operator.
• Manage passage planning considering bathymetry, tides, currents, weather and navigational hazards.
• Operate and oversee DP/joystick systems where fitted.
• Ensure compliance with COLREGs, SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, ISM, flag‑state and class requirements.
• Lead emergency response drills and handle incidents such as grounding, collision, fire or pollution.
• Maintain accurate deck, bridge, stability and statutory records.

Required profile

• Valid Certificate of Competency (COC) and endorsements, Class 1 Master.
• Valid GMDSS, medical fitness and all required STCW certificates.
• Minimum 10 years experience on board a Trailing Suction Hopper Dredger.
• Proven leadership and crew management abilities.

Required skills

• ECDIS, DGPS, AIS and radar operation.
• Echo sounder and dredging/navigation software proficiency.
• DP/joystick system operation.
• Stability and trim management.
• GMDSS operation.
• Marine emergency response procedures.
