Operating Room Medical Coder

About the role

The Operating Room (OP) Medical Coder ensures that all clinical documentation is accurately translated into the appropriate coding systems in compliance with HAAD regulations. This role supports physicians by reviewing operative notes and diagnoses, guaranteeing that coding reflects the care delivered.

Key responsibilities

• Assign and validate ICD‑9, ICD‑10‑CM, CPT, HCPCS, and DRG codes for diagnoses and procedures.
• Review physician documentation for completeness, consistency, and appropriate E&M level assignment.
• Identify secondary complications, comorbidities, and reportable conditions from medical records.
• Provide training and guidance to coding staff and keep them updated on new coding rules.
• Ensure compliance with HAAD coding directives and hospital OSH and infection‑control policies.
• Offer feedback to physicians on documentation gaps and coding errors.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Allied Health Sciences or a related field.
• Minimum 2 years of medical coding experience.
• Certified Coding Associate (CCA) from AHIMA or Certified Professional Coder (CPC) from AAPC.
• Strong command of spoken and written English.

Required skills

• Proficiency with ICD‑9, ICD‑10‑CM, CPT, HCPCS, and DRG coding systems.
• Good computer literacy, especially Microsoft Office applications.
