Principal Engineer – Power Electronics

About the role

EDGE Group’s ADVANCED CONCEPTS unit is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead the design and integration of cutting‑edge power electronics for high‑performance autonomous systems. You will shape technical roadmaps, drive innovation, and ensure seamless hardware‑software interaction across complex electromechanical platforms.

Key responsibilities

• Define and implement technical roadmaps for power electronics and hardware design.
• Lead design and optimisation of advanced DC‑DC converters, inverters and motor drives for high‑efficiency applications.
• Integrate simulation tools (MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, LTspice) with circuit design and prototyping workflows.
• Oversee PCB development using Altium Designer, ensuring signal integrity, thermal performance and manufacturability.
• Direct prototyping, validation and rapid iteration of power systems to meet system‑level requirements.
• Manage machine design projects, coupling power electronics with motors and sensors.
• Ensure cohesive operation of hardware, software and control algorithms, including HIL simulations and field testing.
• Address EMC, thermal management and reliability in system integration.
• Develop advanced control algorithms such as trapezoidal control, Field‑Oriented Control (FOC) and Direct Torque Control (DTC).

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics or related field (PhD or advanced certifications a plus).
• 15+ years of experience in power electronics design, system integration and validation for high‑performance systems.
• Proven track record designing and optimising converters, inverters and motor‑drive systems.

Required skills

• Altium Designer for PCB design.
• MATLAB/Simulink, PLECS, LTspice for modelling and simulation.
• Design of DC‑DC converters, inverters and motor drives.
• Control algorithm development (FOC, DTC, trapezoidal control).
• Hardware‑in‑the‑loop (HIL) testing and field validation.
• Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and thermal management.
• Semiconductor technology knowledge.
