Principal Engineer - Software (HMI)

About the role

EDGE is looking for a Principal Engineer – Software (HMI) to lead UI design and development for a complex Defence Communications and Command & Control system. The role involves designing, integrating and maintaining mission‑critical software components in a multidisciplinary environment.

Key responsibilities

• Produce UI product and system requirement specifications based on end‑user input and operational analysis.
• Develop design concepts and implementation specifications with a focus on usability.
• Create, evaluate and modify prototypes, operational scenarios and process maps.
• Contribute to software architecture, detailed design and integration across distributed systems.
• Maintain software design artefacts, participate in technical reviews and design discussions.
• Ensure software quality through automated unit tests, integration/system/acceptance testing and code reviews.

Required profile

• Degree in Software Engineering.
• Minimum 10 years of software development experience, preferably in communications, defence, mission‑critical or distributed systems.
• Strong proficiency in Java development.
• Experience analysing designs from a Human Factors / Human Systems Integration perspective, including task analyses.
• Experience with GIS frameworks and Web UI fundamentals (HTML, JavaScript, CSS).
• Solid understanding of UML/software modelling and core software engineering principles.
