Principal Piping Engineer

About the role

The Principal Piping Engineer interprets internal and external business issues and recommends best practices, solving complex piping problems independently with minimal guidance. The role may lead functional teams or projects and requires in-depth expertise in piping and broad knowledge of the piping discipline within engineering. It reports to the Lead Engineer, Project Engineer or Project Manager and the Department Manager.

Key responsibilities

• Perform conceptual, FEED or detailed design analysis according to project scope, documentation, design codes, standards and McDermott procedures, within schedule and budget.
• Address complex problems and non-standard situations, reporting them early to the Project Management Team and Department Manager.
• Prepare detailed design calculations, analyses, design reports and procedures; manage time, objectives and resource planning.
• As Lead Engineer, direct medium or large engineering and design teams, plan and direct discipline execution, define interfaces and deliverables, and act as the discipline representative in client and authority meetings.
• Review the piping budget, assign tasks and man-hour budgets to piping sub-disciplines, and support 3D-model reviews at 30%, 60% and 90% progress.
• Provide piping input to Plan Levels 2, 3 and 4 schedules, prepare discipline forecasts, and alert the team to scope deviations or change orders.
• Check and approve design philosophies, specifications, pipe supports, standard detail drawings, MTO and material requisitions; monitor KPIs and take corrective action.
• Lead piping discipline during internal and external audits, assist performance evaluations, and support proposals and studies.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• 15-20 years of experience as a Piping Engineer in oil and gas with a major contractor, covering conceptual, pre-FEED, FEED and detailed design.
• Previous experience as Lead Piping Engineer on FEED and EPC projects via multi-office project execution.
• Detailed knowledge of design phases, design techniques and application of standards, codes and guidelines.
• Familiarity with all piping sub-disciplines, including design and modelling, pipe stress and support, piping material engineering and MTO.
• Knowledge of project coordination, commercial aspects of projects and contract types.
• Registered Professional Engineer or member of a professional engineering society preferred.
• Flexible for business travel.

Required skills

• International codes and standards such as ANSI, ASME, API, BS and NFPA.
• SP3D / E3D / Navisworks.
• Stick-built and modularization approaches.
