School Nurse

About the role

The School Nurse is a registered professional nurse certified by the Maine Department of Education, working within a school environment to protect and improve the health of children, thereby supporting their educational success.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct health assessments, obtain developmental histories, and screen for vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth, and other health deficits.
• Develop and implement individualized health plans, interpret health status for school personnel, and coordinate referrals to parents, community resources, and health agencies.
• Provide health education to students, families, and staff, and serve as a resource for classroom teachers and administrators.
• Manage chronic health conditions, administer medication, and develop crisis‑intervention procedures for acute illness, injury, or emotional disturbances.
• Promote communicable‑disease control through immunization programs, early detection, surveillance, and reporting.

Required profile

• Current license to practice professional nursing in Maine.
• Minimum three years of experience as a registered nurse.
• Baccalaureate degree in nursing or related field, or enrollment in a BS program at the time of application.
• Certification required by the Maine Department of Education.
