Senior Digital Engineer (FPGA Firmware)

About the role

EDGE, an advanced technology group headquartered in the UAE and focused on defence and emerging technologies, is looking for a Senior Digital Engineer to join its Engineering team in Abu Dhabi. The role covers the development, integration, production support and maintenance of firmware for advanced electronic systems and subsystems used in demanding aerospace and defence environments. The ideal candidate has strong expertise in FPGA firmware, VHDL design, embedded systems and SoC architectures, and supports products through the full lifecycle from concept and design to verification, integration and production.

Key responsibilities

• Firmware development: design and implement FPGA firmware in VHDL for FPGA, SoC and CPLD platforms, optimise for resource-constrained devices such as Intel Max10 CPLDs, lead the FPGA development lifecycle from requirements to deployment, build Board Support Packages and peripheral interfaces, and comply with aerospace and defence standards including DO-254.
• Verification, simulation and testing: build automated test benches, simulate, debug and validate FPGA and SoC designs, troubleshoot digital and analog issues at PCB assembly level, and support system integration, verification and production.
• FPGA and PCB design collaboration: contribute to FPGA digital circuit design reviews, work with PCB and E-CAD engineers, verify firmware compatibility with components and boards, and support PCB assembly testing and debugging.
• Embedded software integration: develop embedded C software to interface FPGA firmware with SoC platforms and support integration across firmware, software and hardware teams.
• Documentation and compliance: write requirements, design descriptions, verification plans and test reports, and support DO-254 and DO-178 compliance where applicable.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree (4-year) or higher in Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering or a related field.
• 5-8 years of hands-on FPGA firmware development experience.
• Aerospace, defence or other high-technology industry experience preferred.
• English proficiency required.

• VHDL development and verification
• Intel Altera and/or AMD Xilinx FPGA families (Cyclone, Zynq-7000)
• CPLD devices, especially Intel Max10
• Embedded C on SoC platforms
• Digital and analog circuit design and PCB debugging
• DO-254 and DO-178 knowledge
• Preferred tools: Xilinx Vivado, Quartus Prime, HDL Designer, Altium Designer, Eclipse, Git, ModelSim/Questa
