Software Engineer - Backend

About the role

Desertcart, an e-commerce platform founded in the UAE in 2014, is hiring a Software Engineer - Backend to work on the systems that price, list and update its catalogue of over 50 million products across its sales channels. The role focuses on pricing logic, data pipelines, background processing and marketplace integrations, with very little frontend work. It is based in the Dubai office.

Key responsibilities

• Build and maintain pricing and repricing logic.
• Integrate with marketplace and third-party APIs.
• Build and run background workers and data pipelines that process product data at very large scale.
• Keep these systems accurate, reliable and easy to diagnose when something goes wrong.
• Work with the commercial and operations teams to turn business rules into working code.

Required profile

• 6+ years building production backend systems, with at least 4+ years in Ruby on Rails.
• Experience with systems at scale: tens of millions of records, high job throughput and bulk data processing.
• Care and precision with numbers such as currencies, rounding and percentages.
• Writing tests as part of everyday work.
• Comfortable working in a large, established codebase.

Required skills

• Strong PostgreSQL skills, including performance tuning on large tables.
• Background jobs at scale (Sidekiq or similar), including retries, rate limits and concurrency.
• Integrating with external APIs that are slow, rate-limited or unreliable.
• Nice to have: Amazon SP-API, Noon or Shopify Admin API; repricing or dynamic pricing logic; cross-border e-commerce experience (landed cost, duties and VAT); AWS SQS and S3; a background in control systems, operations research or similar.
