Superintendent - Marine

About the role

The Marine Superintendent ensures the safe operation of vessels and compliance with all international marine requirements. The role supports the implementation and upkeep of the Safety Management System and involves regular ship inspections against the ISM and ISPS codes. It is based in Abu Dhabi.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor day-to-day ship operations so that activities at sea and in port run smoothly, without delay or accidents.
• Keep vessel certifications valid and ensure reporting and documentation comply with ISM, ISPS, OHSAS 18000 and ISO 14001, including drill, ACT and safety meeting reports.
• Provide navigational data to avoid hazards and ensure weekly, cumulative and annual corrections to charts and publications are onboard.
• Maintain the SMS with consistent improvements and prepare for audits efficiently.
• Help identify safety risks and environmental aspects of vessel operations, and raise corrective actions where needed.
• Brief shipboard senior officers before they join vessels on safety management systems, company policies, operations and charterer requirements.
• Work with the technical superintendent to maintain port and charterer requirements.
• Carry out internal audits as planned by the HSQE manager.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in marine engineering, mechanical engineering or another technical discipline.
• At least 5 years of sea-going experience, including a minimum of 4 years in shipping or offshore.
• Sea-going experience as Chief Engineer or 2nd Engineer with at least Class 2 certification.
• At least one year as Tech Superintendent or as Chief/2nd Engineer on offshore supply or dive support vessels; DP vessel experience is highly advantageous.
• Minimum Class 3 Certificate of Competency (COC).
• Fluent English; Arabic is an asset.

Required skills

• Knowledge of ISM, ISPS, SOLAS, MARPOL, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.
• MS Office, especially Excel.
• Good organizational and communication skills, attention to detail, and ability to guide and evaluate subordinates.
