Supervisor, Speech Therapy

About the role

This position evaluates patients referred to Speech Therapy, organizes and implements individualized therapeutic programs, and records patient progress and response to treatment. It also coordinates and supervises the operational medical and clinical aspects of the Speech-Language Pathology, Swallowing and Tracheostomy programs.

Key responsibilities

• Assess complex or undifferentiated abnormalities, develop treatment plans and use standardized assessment protocols and outcome measures
• Perform videofluoroscopic, videoendoscopic and videolaryngoscopic evaluations of dysphagia and dysphonia, and interpret test results with the referring physician
• Determine the therapeutic plan, including frequency, focus and duration of treatment, and administer evidence-based interventions
• Select assistive devices such as speaking valves and voice prosthesis, and counsel patients and families on diagnosis, diet and oral hygiene
• Coordinate and supervise junior staff, allocate SLT staff, approve leaves and audit clinical documentation against regulatory guidelines
• Maintain accurate records, follow CCAD core standards of care and the HAAD requirement of 20 CME every two years, and uphold confidentiality and professional ethics
• Contribute to departmental programs, policies and quality improvement projects, and participate in multidisciplinary care and discharge planning

Required profile

• Advanced qualifications in speech-language pathology
• Experience supervising junior speech and language therapists
• Ability to obtain 20 CME credits every two years to maintain licensure

Required skills

• Oral, pharyngeal, laryngeal and respiratory examination
• Standard and non-standard speech and language assessments, and bedside swallowing evaluation
• Video fluoroscopic swallow study (VFSS); preferred: fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES)
• Management of tracheostomized and laryngectomized patients, and treatment of voice disorders
• Augmentative and alternative communication systems
