Coding Manager

About the role

American Hospital Dubai is looking for a Coding Manager to lead staff who review, interpret, code and abstract medical records according to standard classification systems. The role covers the most advanced coding and abstraction work, data quality reviews, complex reporting and support of the Revenue Management and Finance departments so that e-claims data is submitted regularly through the DHA e-claims weblink.

Key responsibilities

• Manage a wide range of activities reviewing and coding inpatient and outpatient medical records, and assign claims to teams based on criteria such as encounter type, insurance and financial implications.
• Ensure claims are fully coded before being assigned to the submission queue.
• Establish and maintain the diagnostic and procedural coding system approved by the hospital and regulatory bodies, and run a formal coding audit process with audit tools.
• Review ICD-10-CM and CPT coding and DRG appropriateness, create and monitor case mix and DRG reports, and investigate variances.
• Evaluate clinical documentation quality and arrange training for healthcare professionals on coding guidelines and documentation techniques.
• Select, train and supervise technical and clerical staff, manage their work, handle leave requests and promote recruitment and retention.
• Develop and implement coding guidelines and training programmes for physicians and coders, and represent the facility in payer and regulatory audits.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Health Information Technology or a healthcare-related field.
• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Coding Associate (CCA) or Certified Procedural Coder (CPC); CPMA or CDIP certification preferred.
• Minimum of 8 to 12 years of experience in a Medical Records department.
• Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, medical terminology and pathophysiology.

Required skills

• ICD-9-CM or ICD-10-CM coding, CPT coding and DRG coding.
• Use of health information systems (HIS) software and coding and abstracting software.
