Commodity Buyer – Grains & Wheat Procurement

About the role

The Commodity Buyer is responsible for securing supply of key grain commodities such as milling wheat, hard wheat, semi‑hard wheat, feed corn, barley and related products. The role ensures smooth execution of contracts, manages sourcing and shipment plans, and maintains uninterrupted supply while delivering the best market value.

Key responsibilities

• Optimize sourcing and shipment plans to achieve long‑term commodity coverage at optimal market positions.
• Lead sourcing and shipping for a range of grains including milling wheat, hard wheat, semi‑hard wheat, feed corn, feed barley, SBM High Pro, SBM Standard, Agri Pro Wheat Bran, DDGS and CFP.
• Execute tenders and direct spot purchases, overseeing shipment processes and preventing gaps or quality disputes.
• Finalize and sign supplier contracts within required timelines.
• Monitor freight market pricing, market movements, savings and procurement requirements, providing accurate reporting.
• Manage freight fixtures, ship nominations and demurrage to support shipping programmes.
• Coordinate with Finance for timely letters of credit, CAD payments and supplier settlements.
• Maintain communication with suppliers, brokers, surveyors, vessel agents and shipping agencies.
• Track competitor sourcing trends and cargo movements, delivering market insights.
• Support R&D and Commercial teams in exploring alternative raw materials and cost‑saving opportunities.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s, Diploma or Master’s degree in a relevant field.
• Minimum 7 years of procurement/commodity buying experience, preferably in grain commodities.
• Advanced professional and operational training, including GAFTA courses.
• Experience with foreign import/export regulations and procedures.
• Proven track record in negotiation, contract management and freight operations.
