Control Room Operator - Gas and Steam Turbines

About the role

The Control Room Operator ensures the safe and efficient, continuous operation of gas and steam turbines, waste heat boilers and their associated plant equipment and utilities, either from the control room or in the field. The operator works under the instructions of the shift supervisor or the main control room.

Key responsibilities

• Operate a set number of gas turbines, steam turbines and waste heat boilers and their auxiliaries safely and efficiently
• Carry out safe start-up and shut-down of turbines and associated systems from the control room when assigned
• Operate potline rectifier transformers from the control room
• Communicate with customers and handle day-to-day issues under the supervision of the system controller
• Perform routine checks of in-service and standby equipment and monitor instrument readings
• Record parameter readings regularly, report deviations and inform the supervisor of abnormalities
• Assist the supervisor and power operator in start-ups, shut-downs and isolation of equipment for maintenance
• Take part in routine testing and re-commissioning after maintenance outages and keep standby equipment ready
• Carry out on-the-job training of subordinates and maintain high housekeeping standards

Required profile

• Diploma in Engineering or equivalent
• 3 years' experience in the Operations department of a modern power station
• Competence in Power Plant 1 and 2 equipment, including gas turbines, steam turbines, waste heat boilers, compressor house, firewater pumps, desiccant dryer house, sea water pumps and chlorination plant
• Knowledge of rectifier transformers, compressed air house, condenser sea water pump house and demineralisation plant
