Dean of Research and Faculty Development

About the role

The Dean of Research and Faculty Development will lead the research agenda of Sharjah Maritime Academy, shaping its strategic direction and fostering a vibrant research culture across faculty and students. Reporting to the Provost and Vice‑Chancellor Academic, the role combines academic leadership with operational management of research programmes and innovation initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and implement the Academy’s research strategy, overseeing internal and external research activities, budgets and income streams.
• Organise and promote seminars, conferences and symposia to raise the Academy’s research profile.
• Provide strategic leadership to create a supportive research environment, linking research outcomes to teaching and learning.
• Collaborate with College Deans, Program Heads and business partners to integrate research insights into academic programmes.
• Lead the development and delivery of postgraduate research programmes and support postgraduate taught courses.
• Champion the digital research ecosystem in partnership with the Librarian and professional support staff.
• Monitor compliance with UAE Ministry of Education standards and drive continuous improvement.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant academic discipline.
• Recognised qualification for teaching in higher education.
• Membership in a relevant industry body.
• Minimum five years of senior academic leadership experience, including successful change‑management initiatives.
• Proven record of securing and managing major research grants and delivering world‑leading research outputs.
• Strong understanding of digital learning technologies and research support facilities.
• Familiarity with UAE higher‑education policies, CAA initiatives and regulatory framework.
