Head of Year 1 (KG2) – Primary Leadership Role

About the role

GEMS Cambridge International Private School Sharjah is seeking an outstanding Head of Year 1 (KG2) to lead and manage the progress of the youngest learners. Reporting to the Heads of Key Stage and the Principal/CEO, you will be a key member of the Middle Leadership Team, driving the school’s vision and ensuring high standards across the year group.

Key responsibilities

• Articulate and implement a clear vision for Year 1 in line with the school’s ethos.
• Lead, coordinate and evaluate student progress, using baseline data to inform teaching.
• Contribute to curriculum planning, resource management, and policy development for the year group.
• Oversee assessment for learning, ensuring consistency, coherence and relevance.
• Collaborate with Class and Form Tutors, Heads of Subject Areas, Inclusion and Student Welfare teams.
• Develop and monitor Personal Learning Plans for under‑achieving students.
• Ensure appropriate placement of students in class/tutor groups.
• Support the school’s Performance Development Programme and uphold high expectations in all aspects of school life.

Required profile

• Proven experience in primary education leadership or a similar middle‑leadership role.
• Strong understanding of curriculum design, assessment practices and data‑driven instruction.
• Ability to communicate effectively with parents, staff and senior leadership.
• Commitment to the school’s Behaviour for Learning Policy and inclusive education.
• Accountability for delivering high standards and continuous improvement.
