Kitchen Steward

About the role

The Kitchen Steward ensures the kitchen environment remains clean, safe, and ready for food preparation. Working closely with chefs and kitchen staff, you will maintain hygiene standards and support smooth kitchen operations.

Key responsibilities

• Clean and sanitise all kitchen areas, equipment, and surfaces according to food hygiene standards.
• Wash, rinse, dry and store crockery, cutlery, glassware, pots, pans and utensils using manual methods or dishwashing equipment.
• Operate dishwashers, glasswashers and other cleaning equipment safely and efficiently.
• Inspect cleaned items for residue, damage or breakage and take appropriate action.
• Manage waste removal, recycling, and maintain cleanliness in waste storage areas.
• Use cleaning chemicals and sanitising products in line with COSHH requirements and PPE procedures.
• Receive, store and rotate kitchen supplies, reporting low stock or issues to supervisors.
• Report equipment faults, safety hazards and incidents promptly.
• Collaborate with kitchen teams to support timely service and maintain a safe work environment.

Required profile

• Previous experience in a similar kitchen or cleaning role is desirable; training may be provided.
• Strong attention to detail and ability to follow cleaning schedules and safety procedures.
• Reliable, punctual and able to work independently as well as part of a team.
• Good communication skills and a cooperative attitude.
• Physically capable of standing, walking, bending, lifting and handling kitchen supplies in a warm, busy environment.
• Flexibility to work shifts including early mornings, evenings, weekends and public holidays.

Required skills

• Understanding of kitchen cleaning practices and food hygiene standards.
• Ability to operate dishwashing and cleaning equipment safely.
