Learning Support Assistant – Primary School

About the role

The Learning Support Assistant works closely with teachers to help pupils achieve maximum progress across the curriculum. The role involves providing targeted assistance, encouraging independence and ensuring a safe, supportive environment for all students.

Key responsibilities

• Support individual pupils and small groups with learning, delivering intervention programmes as directed by teachers.
• Encourage independence by guiding children through questioning, dialogue, demonstration and modelling.
• Prepare teaching resources, create interactive displays and assist with classroom organisation.
• Supervise pupils during trips, break times, swimming and PE lessons, and act as a backup for bus supervision.
• Manage pupil behaviour positively, using the school’s reward system and acting as a role model.
• Maintain confidentiality and adhere to safeguarding and health‑and‑safety procedures.
• Meet weekly with the teaching team to discuss pupil progress and coordinate support.
• Run the breakfast club (6:30‑7:30 am) or after‑school club (2:45‑4:25 pm) on a rotating schedule.
