Machine Learning Engineer

About the role

The Institute of Foundation Models at MBZUAI is a research lab focused on building, understanding, using and risk-managing foundation models. As a Machine Learning Engineer in Abu Dhabi, you will develop and implement machine learning models that address real-world challenges, working with cross-functional teams to deploy scalable solutions. The role sits at the heart of foundation model training, alongside researchers, data scientists and engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Work with research teams to understand technologies and adapt and integrate them into the codebase.
• Build systems supporting the lifecycle of machine learning models, such as data preprocessing, pre-training, post-training and evaluation, especially for foundation models.
• Take part in or lead design reviews with peers and stakeholders to choose between available technologies.
• Review code from other developers and give feedback on style, correctness, testability and efficiency.
• Help maintain documentation and educational content, updating it according to product and program changes.
• Triage product and system issues and debug them, analysing their impact on hardware, network or service operations.
• Contribute to research papers and represent MBZUAI at industry conferences and events.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience; a Master's or PhD in Computer Science or a related field is preferred.
• Minimum 3 years of software engineering experience, including machine learning models, ML infrastructure, NLP or computer vision.
• 2 years of experience with data structures or algorithms, and 2 years with machine learning algorithms and tools such as TensorFlow, or AI and deep learning.
• Preferred: 2 years improving performance on large-scale data processing and hands-on experience with LLM algorithms such as supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and RLHF.

Required skills

• Software development in one or more programming languages (2 years, or 1 year with an advanced degree).
• Machine learning, deep learning and natural language processing.

• Excellent problem-solving, troubleshooting, communication and collaboration skills.
