Senior Geotechnical / Tunnel Engineer - 3-6 Month Contract

About the role

A multi-national engineering consultancy needs a well-experienced Geotechnical / Tunnel Engineer to join its team in Dubai on a major new tunnel and underground infrastructure project. The role is an initial 3-6 month contract, with immediate joining, and is filled by outsourced staff through J10 Consulting. Candidates should have a proven background on major rail or road tunnel projects in the UAE or wider GCC, and have worked for a recognised consultancy or PMC before.

Key responsibilities

• Lead geotechnical design of large-diameter TBM tunnels, including crossover caverns, ground treatment, pre- and permanent support, and excavation sequencing (SEM/NATM)
• Lead deep excavation methodology studies for stations, shafts and cross-passages, including retention systems, base stability, dewatering and groundwater control
• Direct building and utility damage assessment, damage risk assessment, protective measures and instrumentation and monitoring
• Predict TBM advance and production rates and cutter intervention frequency and strategy
• Owning the numerical modelling strategy (PLAXIS, FLAC/FLAC3D, MIDAS GTS or equivalent), soil-structure interaction, groundwater and seismic assessment, and reviewing the team's analyses
• Prepare the Geotechnical Interpretative Report, define ground investigation requirements and manage the GI programme from procurement to close-out
• Carry out TBM optioning studies, develop the procurement and manufacturing plan, and prepare tunnelling logistics plans and method statements

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering; MSc or PhD strongly preferred
• At least 10 years of post-graduate experience in geotechnical and tunnel engineering, including 3 years on large-diameter TBM rail or metro projects in a lead or principal role
• Demonstrable experience in large-diameter TBM design, mined crossover cavern design, deep excavation, third-party damage assessment and TBM production rate prediction
• Author of Geotechnical Interpretative Reports and hands-on management of ground investigation campaigns
• Technical authority in tunnelling geotechnics, with experience leading junior engineers and managing sub-consultants
• English communication skills; UAE and GCC experience, and RTA, Dubai Metro or Etihad Rail experience, are an advantage

• Geotechnical numerical analysis, soil-structure interaction, groundwater and seismic assessment
