Senior Software Engineer (Backend / Platform)

About the role

Hoxton Wealth is seeking a senior backend and platform engineer to lead the design, development, and evolution of mission‑critical fintech systems. The role combines hands‑on coding with architectural ownership, ensuring the platform remains scalable, secure, and compliant.

Key responsibilities

• Design, evolve, and govern backend services using Node.js, PHP/Laravel, and Python/FastAPI.
• Own REST API architecture, including domain modelling, versioning, idempotency, and security controls.
• Produce and review high‑level and low‑level designs, focusing on scalability, auditability, and resilience.
• Write and review complex financial workflow code, ensuring performance and security.
• Lead incident remediation, root‑cause analysis, and systematic fixes.
• Prioritise technical debt based on business impact and risk.
• Introduce AI‑assisted development practices while maintaining rigorous testing and documentation standards.
• Define data modelling strategies for MySQL and PostgreSQL, guaranteeing financial accuracy and regulatory compliance.
• Mentor a small backend/platform team and collaborate with product, compliance, security, and DevOps groups.

Required profile

• 8‑10 years of professional software engineering experience with progressive responsibility in system ownership and technical leadership.
• Proven experience delivering high‑availability services in regulated or fintech environments.
• Strong architectural mindset combined with a willingness to stay hands‑on.
• Ability to guide and mentor junior engineers and influence cross‑functional teams.
