Data Protection Officer (Technical Data Governance)

About the role

You will establish practical data governance and protection controls across the organisation. You will also work closely with technology teams to translate data protection requirements into clear, workable controls and assess whether proposed technical solutions meet those requirements.

Key responsibilities

• Establish and maintain data ownership, data asset registers and data classification standards.
• Define requirements for data retention, monitoring, deletion and secure handling.
• Translate regulatory and data protection requirements into practical technical controls.
• Work with engineering, data and information security teams to agree appropriate control designs.
• Review proposed technical solutions and determine whether they meet the underlying requirement.
• Provide guidance on controls involving encryption, key management, access, retention and automated deletion.
• Monitor the effectiveness of data governance controls and identify areas requiring improvement.
• Maintain clear documentation and evidence to support regulatory, audit and customer requirements.
• Support the organisation in managing sensitive data across systems, platforms and jurisdictions.

Required profile

• Strong experience in technical data governance, data protection or information security in a Fintech or Financial Services environment.
• Practical knowledge of data ownership, asset registers, classification, retention and deletion.
• Ability to translate data requirements into controls that technology teams can implement.
• Technical understanding to review and challenge control designs proposed by engineers and system owners.
• Experience working closely with engineering, data, cloud or information security teams.
• Understanding of data protection and regulatory requirements such as GDPR/UK GDPR, US privacy laws, Singapore PDPA, and Middle East expectations.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Relevant backgrounds may include data governance professionals, data engineers moving into governance, information security specialists, or technical data protection professionals.
