Senior Embedded Software Engineer – Real-Time Engine Control

About the role

EDGE’s POWERTECH centre is seeking a senior embedded software engineer to design, develop and validate real-time firmware for engine control units (ECUs) used in gas-turbine engines. The role combines safety-critical software development with close collaboration with hardware and system engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement real-time embedded software for ECUs, including bootloaders, task schedulers and control logic.
• Develop safety-critical code in C/C++ following DO-178C, MISRA and ISO 26262 standards.
• Translate MATLAB/Simulink models into embedded code or integrate with auto-code generators.
• Integrate firmware with custom hardware (MCUs, FPGAs, sensors, actuators) and support hardware-in-the-loop testing using dSPACE, NI or Vector.
• Lead root-cause analysis, debugging with oscilloscopes and logic analyzers, and produce verification artifacts such as traceability matrices and test plans.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical, Computer or related engineering.
• 8+ years of embedded software experience, preferably in aerospace, defence or automotive safety-critical projects.
• Proven expertise with bare-metal and RTOS-based development on microcontrollers such as ARM Cortex-M, TI C2000 or Infineon Aurix.
• Strong understanding of control systems, signal processing and real-time constraints.

Required skills

• C and C++ programming.
• DO-178C, MISRA and ISO 26262 compliance.
• MATLAB/Simulink and Embedded Coder.
• RTOS, bare-metal development.
• Communication protocols: CAN, SPI, I2C, UART, RS-422, ARINC 429.
• Version control tools: Git, SVN.
• dSPACE, NI or Vector testing platforms.
