Sustainability Officer

About the role

The Sustainability Officer will lead the development and implementation of environmental initiatives across University Hospital Sharjah. Working closely with clinical, facilities and administrative teams, the role aims to reduce the hospital’s carbon footprint while maintaining high standards of patient care.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and execute a hospital‑wide sustainability strategy aligned with local regulations and accreditation standards.
• Draft, update and enforce policies on energy use, water conservation, waste management and sustainable procurement.
• Monitor energy consumption, water usage and waste streams, identifying opportunities for efficiency and cost savings.
• Lead waste reduction programmes, including recycling, re‑processing of medical supplies and safe disposal of hazardous materials.
• Promote renewable energy adoption and green building practices where feasible.
• Engage staff, patients and visitors through training, awareness campaigns and sustainability signage.
• Collect, analyse and report performance metrics such as carbon footprint, energy savings and waste reduction to senior leadership and external stakeholders.
• Represent the hospital in sustainability forums, build partnerships with local authorities, NGOs and suppliers.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Public Health, Facilities Management or a related field (Master’s preferred).
• Minimum of 1 month of relevant experience in sustainability or environmental management.
• Strong understanding of healthcare regulations, accreditation requirements and environmental legislation.
