English Lead – Head of English Department

About the role

The English Lead will steer the strategic development and daily management of the English department across all key stages (EYFS to KS5) in an all‑through school setting. Reporting to senior leadership, the role ensures high‑quality teaching, fosters a love of English, and drives academic excellence throughout the school.

Key responsibilities

• Provide dynamic leadership for primary and secondary English staff, setting a clear vision aligned with the school development plan.
• Design, implement and review a progressive English curriculum ensuring progression from EYFS to KS5.
• Monitor and improve teaching quality through lesson observations, modelling best practice and supporting CPD.
• Use assessment data to identify under‑achievement, plan interventions and raise attainment for all learners, including SEND and EAL.
• Collaborate with other subject and phase leaders to ensure consistency and support whole‑school priorities.
• Uphold safeguarding standards and professional conduct across the department.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree plus PGDE/PGCE or Masters in Education.
• Minimum 4 years of teaching experience with a proven record of leadership.
• Strong understanding of the English curriculum from early years to sixth form.
• Experience using data to drive improvement and supporting diverse learners.
