Head of English Department – Al Maharat Campus

About the role

The Head of English will lead the strategic development and daily management of the English department across all key stages (EYFS to KS5) at the Al Maharat campus. This senior position ensures high standards of teaching and learning, fosters a love of English, and drives academic excellence throughout the school.

Key responsibilities

• Provide dynamic leadership for the English department across primary and secondary phases, developing a clear vision and improvement plan aligned with the school’s overall strategy.
• Line‑manage and support teaching staff and assistants through performance management, CPD, and mentoring, while leading regular departmental meetings.
• Design, develop, and oversee a progressive English curriculum from EYFS to KS5, ensuring clear progression and coverage.
• Model best practice in teaching, support lesson planning, and conduct regular observations and learning walks to maintain high‑quality instruction.
• Use assessment data to inform teaching, identify underachievement, and implement targeted interventions, keeping up to date with national developments.
• Be accountable for pupil outcomes, tracking progress and attainment, and developing strategies to raise achievement across all abilities, including SEND and EAL.
• Collaborate with other subject leaders, phase leaders, and senior leadership to support whole‑school priorities and ensure consistency between primary and secondary English staff.
• Uphold safeguarding policies, maintain professional conduct, and serve as a positive role model for pupils and staff.
