Senior Backend Engineer (IoT & Smart Platforms)

About the role

Flatgigs is looking for a Senior Backend Engineer with deep expertise in IoT ecosystems and M2M connectivity to build its next-generation smart platform from scratch. You will architect the core of the product, connecting physical hardware such as telematics units and smart meters to scalable cloud logic, and own the end-to-end lifecycle of IoT data, from hardware integration and M2M SIM orchestration to business logic for automated monitoring.

Key responsibilities

• Design and implement a greenfield, microservice-based backend optimized for high-throughput IoT data ingestion.
• Integrate hardware (telematics, smart meters) and manage the M2M SIM lifecycle (provisioning, activation, data limits) via telco APIs.
• Implement protocol handlers for MQTT, CoAP, HTTP/2, WebSockets and LwM2M.
• Monitor signal strength (RSSI), manage APN configurations and handle failover for cellular M2M/eUICC devices.
• Build backend logic for geofencing, real-time alerting and automated data-usage capping.
• Store and query large streams of time-series data in PostgreSQL (and TimescaleDB).
• Apply TLS/SSL, X.509 certificates and private APN/VPN tunneling for secure M2M communication.

Required profile

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Telecommunications or a related field.
• 5+ years in backend development, with at least 3 years on IoT/M2M product ecosystems.
• Ability to troubleshoot network-layer issues such as packet loss and latency in cellular M2M environments.
• Proven ability to take a product from concept to production-ready, global scale.

Required skills

• Node.js and NestJS (TypeScript); event-driven architectures and microservices.
• PostgreSQL schema design and performance tuning.
• M2M SIM integration with CMPs such as Cisco Jasper, Ericsson DCP or 1NCE via REST APIs.
• Understanding of NB-IoT, LTE-M (Cat-M1) and 4G/5G constraints.
• Integration with telematics (GPS, OBD-II) and smart metering (DLMS/COSEM).
• Docker and Kubernetes, CI/CD pipelines.
• Preferred: eSIM/eUICC, private APN, IPSEC/VPN, RS-485, CAN bus, Modbus.
