Commis I - Kitchen Assistant

About the role

This position is for a Commis I who prepares ingredients and cooks food in a hotel, restaurant or catering kitchen. The role covers food preparation, cooking, kitchen cleaning and following safety and quality standards.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare ingredients for cooking, including portioning, chopping and storing food, and wash and peel fresh fruit and vegetables
• Weigh, measure and mix ingredients, and prepare and cook food according to recipes, quality standards, presentation standards and a food preparation checklist
• Prepare cold foods and operate ovens, stoves, grills, microwaves and fryers
• Test foods to check they are cooked sufficiently and monitor food quality
• Set up and break down the workstation, and serve food in proper portions onto proper receptacles
• Wash and disinfect the kitchen area, tables, tools, knives and equipment, and check appliance and food temperatures
• Follow company and safety policies, report accidents and unsafe conditions, complete safety training and certifications, and keep a clean, professional appearance
• Work under pressure in a fast-paced environment, stand or walk for long periods, lift up to 25 pounds, and perform other duties asked by supervisors

Required profile

• 1 to 3 years of experience in a similar role in a hotel, restaurant or catering environment
• Ability to follow recipes, standard operating procedures and chef instructions accurately
• Attention to detail, commitment to food quality and presentation, and ability to work efficiently under pressure
• Flexibility to work shifts, weekends and public holidays
