Consultant Ophthalmologist – Cornea & External Eye Disease

About the role

The Department of Ophthalmology in Abu Dhabi is seeking an experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist with a focus on Cornea and External Eye Disease. The successful candidate will lead the diagnosis, medical management and, where permitted, surgical treatment of complex corneal conditions.

Key responsibilities

• Provide consultant‑level assessment and management of corneal and ocular surface disorders, including keratoconus, infections, dystrophies, dry eye, inflammation, trauma and tumors.
• Interpret corneal topography, tomography, pachymetry and other advanced imaging to guide treatment decisions.
• Perform corneal procedures and surgeries within clinical privileges, and coordinate with transplant, refractive, glaucoma and retina services.
• Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions, clinical protocol development, quality‑improvement initiatives and research activities.
• Teach, supervise and mentor residents and junior ophthalmologists.

Required profile

• Medical degree and recognized postgraduate training in Ophthalmology with Board Certification.
• Valid Department of Health (DoH) Abu Dhabi Consultant licence in Ophthalmology.
• Significant post‑specialist experience as a Consultant/Specialist Ophthalmologist, preferably in a tertiary centre.
• Fellowship or advanced training in Cornea & External Eye Disease is highly desirable.

Required skills

• Corneal transplantation techniques (e.g., DALK, DSAEK/DMEK).
• Advanced diagnostic techniques and corneal imaging.
• Medical management of ocular surface disease.
• Keratoconus management, including corneal cross‑linking.
• Ocular surface reconstruction.
