Head of Department, Chemical & Biological Engineering (Fall 2027)

About the role

The College of Engineering at the American University of Sharjah is seeking a visionary academic leader to serve as Head of the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering starting Fall 2027. The role involves overseeing the department’s teaching, research, and service activities and driving its sustainable development.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic leadership and develop short‑ and long‑term plans aligned with the college and university strategies.
• Ensure high‑quality teaching through technology‑enabled delivery, problem‑based learning and continuous curriculum improvement.
• Promote innovative, high‑impact multidisciplinary research and optimal use of research funds and facilities.
• Mentor, inspire and support faculty and staff to achieve excellence in teaching, research and service.
• Lead student recruitment, retention and enrichment activities, including internships, competitions and outreach.
• Maintain and expand collaborations with industry, government, alumni and professional organisations.
• Oversee departmental operations such as scheduling, budgeting, compliance, accreditation and risk management.
• Conduct fair faculty and staff evaluations, promotions and contract decisions.

Required profile

• Earned doctorate in chemical engineering or a closely related field.
• Demonstrated research leadership with an outstanding publication record.
• Excellence in teaching and a record of academic and professional service.
• Strong communication skills and the ability to engage diverse internal and external stakeholders.
• Leadership style characterised by transparency, integrity, fairness and collegiality.
