Laboratory Assistant - Early Childhood Education

About the role

The Education Lab Assistant supports the effective operation of the Education Laboratory at Higher Colleges of Technology. The role assists Lab Instructors and faculty in preparing, delivering and managing practical learning activities, providing technical, logistical and student support so that pre-service teachers experience a safe, well-organised and engaging hands-on learning environment.

Key responsibilities

• Coordinate with the Education Divisional Resources Specialist to identify required resources, equipment and tools and support the procurement process.
• Oversee and lead the Lab Utilisation Audit, manage documentation workflows and coordinate reporting with stakeholders.
• Help prepare laboratory sessions, materials, equipment and learning resources.
• Set up, test and dismantle equipment, tools and educational technologies used in demonstrations and experiments.
• Support students during lab sessions by clarifying instructions and helping them use equipment.
• Monitor activities for compliance with health, safety and housekeeping standards, and keep the lab organised, clean and stocked.
• Report equipment malfunctions, safety concerns and material shortages, and help prepare equipment orders.
• Assist in setting up learning centres and record student attendance, participation and task completion as directed.
• Provide basic technical troubleshooting for laboratory tools, equipment and educational technologies.
• Support college-based activities such as competitions, school visits and exhibitions, and maintain confidentiality of student and institutional information.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Early Childhood Education or a related field.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills, able to work with students, faculty and staff.
• Ability to follow instructions accurately and collaborate in a team.
• Strong organisational skills with excellent attention to detail.
• Willingness to learn and adapt to new technologies, teaching tools and laboratory procedures.
