Ophthalmology Consultant

About the role

The Ophthalmology Consultant provides senior, evidence‑based medical care within the ophthalmology specialty at a SEHA Hospital in Abu Dhabi. The role includes leadership in clinical governance, training of junior staff, and participation in quality improvement initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and supervise delivery of high‑quality, evidence‑based ophthalmic care, diagnosing and treating patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Conduct patient examinations, order and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe treatments, and develop comprehensive care plans.
• Oversee and train junior medical staff, including specialists, GPs and residents.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and attend multi‑disciplinary meetings to ensure holistic patient care.
• Participate in rotational on‑call coverage, providing out‑of‑hours service.
• Document clinical information accurately and comply with hospital, departmental and DOH policies.
• Engage in clinical audits, peer review and risk management to drive continuous improvement.
• Communicate effectively with patients and families, obtaining informed consent for procedures.

Required profile

• MBBS or equivalent degree with a postgraduate qualification (MD, MS, DNB) and successful completion of a recognized specialty training program.
• 3‑7 years post‑specialty clinical experience in a multidisciplinary setting.
• Valid DOH (Department of Health Abu Dhabi) license, including primary source verification and exam completion where required.
• Fluency in English and Arabic; additional languages are an asset.
• Strong communication, leadership and problem‑solving abilities, with a commitment to continuous medical education.
