School Librarian (Term 2 Start)

About the role

Ranches Primary School, located in the Arabian Ranches 2 community of Dubai, is recruiting a school librarian to join its team. The school, which grew from 45 children in 2015 to more than 1,000 pupils, is an inclusive, primary-only school committed to nurturing community spirit and extra-curricular opportunities. The librarian will help build a welcoming, inclusive library that promotes a love of reading and supports the school's literacy and curriculum priorities.

Key responsibilities

• Work with teaching staff and the Head of Reading to plan and deliver the information skills curriculum, including library sessions with reading and storytelling activities.
• Help pupils develop research, information-literacy and library skills, and guide them in selecting books suited to their ability and interests.
• Organise reading initiatives, book displays, themed activities, competitions, book fairs and events such as World Book Day.
• Manage the day-to-day running of the library, keeping an accurate record of issues and returns and maintaining an inclusive, diverse collection.
• Catalogue and classify resources, and make the library attractive and accessible to all children and staff.
• Support Year 6 student library leaders and work with teachers, parents and carers.
• Comply with safeguarding policies, report safeguarding concerns promptly, and follow school policies on child protection, behaviour, equality, health and safety and data protection.

Required profile

• High school diploma or bachelor's degree; a relevant librarian qualification is desirable.
• Proven track record of working with children aged 3 to 11 years.
• Experience in a school environment, in a multicultural setting, and in maintaining confidentiality.
• Firm commitment to extracurricular activities outside normal school hours.

Required skills

• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
• Knowledge of children's literature and children's resources, and of library and information skills.
• Commitment to equalities and diversity in library services, and awareness of child development and the role of reading.
